In times when a large number of households have pet dogs, cats and other animals, it is difficult for the pet owners to believe that their loved animal could pose a risk of an infection to them or their family members.

On this World Zoonoses Day, observed on July 6 annually, it is important to learn about zoontic diseases, their causes and concerns. Zoonotic diseases are the diseases or infections which can be spread from animals to humans and vice versa among residents especially pet owners

Health experts stated that unsafe contact with a diseased animal could result in passing on the infection to humans. Ebola, swine flu, rabies and even the recent Covid infection are an example of serious and lethal zoonotic diseases.

As pets could be carrying virus, bacteria, fungus and parasites, these could also pose a threat to the health of humans especially kids who often play with them.
